SPF Testing for Sunscreens - In Vivo & In Vitro Methods (ISO Standards)
SPF evaluation is essential for consumer safety and claim substantiation under EU and international cosmetic regulations.
New ISO Standards for Sunscreen Testing (2024)
In line with continuous scientific advancement and alignment with the latest international standards, HD LAB applies the newly established ISO standards for sunscreen efficacy assessment:
ISO 23675:2024 – In Vitro Determination of SPF
ISO 23675:2024 defines a standardised methodology for the in vitro determination of SPF, providing reliable and reproducible laboratory-based evaluation of sunscreen performance, either as an alternative or complementary approach to in vivo testing.
ISO 23698:2024 – HDRS (Hybrid Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy)
ISO 23698:2024 introduces the HDRS method, combining in vivo and in vitro techniques for sunscreen assessment, enhancing result correlation, accuracy and contributing to the reduction of volunteer UV exposure.
These methods are applied in accordance with European regulatory requirements and Cosmetics Europe guidelines, fully supporting PIF and CPSR documentation.
In Vivo SPF Testing
(ISO 24444:2019)
- Volunteers: 10–20 subjects (Fitzpatrick phototypes I–III)
- Application dose: 2 mg/cm²
- UVB exposure: 290–320 nm
- Measurement of MED (Minimal Erythema Dose)
Deliverables
